Festive Season Survival Strategies

I think it’s important to acknowledge that truth that food is so much more than just fuel. And it’s important to celebrate with friends, family and co-workers, enjoy festive food and the odd cocktail or two, but how do you prevent the occasional treat from turning into weeks of overindulging. This strategy works really well, whether it’s a party, meal out, or Christmas Day at home; think about these 3 things:

  1. What is most important aspect of the occasion?

  2. How frequent is it, is it a once a year or will there be several of them?

  3. How important it is to you?

If being present is the most important thing at a work party, do you need to eat the terrible canapés they’re serving too? Eat before going so you’re not hungry and focus on being present and spending time with your colleagues.

If you know the food is going to be top notch at the amazing restaurant where you’re meeting friends to celebrate breaking up for the holidays, so tuck in and really enjoy yourself. Savour those flavours with no regrets!

Mince pies are a Christmas classic and if you do love them (like me), but you’re being offered one everywhere you go; say no thanks when offered them at work, but say yes please you go to visit Grandma and she offers you her legendary home cooked ones. You know it makes sense!

And if you do overindulge, DON’T stress out about it, DON’T feel guilty or restrict your foods the next day, but focus on these strategies instead:

  1. Drink lots of water

  2. Eat regular meals

  3. Fill your plate with veggies and lean protein at each meal

Remember - good nutrition is about consistency over perfection and what you do the majority of the year has WAY more influence on your health and performance than what you do for a day or few at this time of year.
